The crisp morning air, the golden leaves crunching underfoot, the scent of autumn—it’s that special time of year again. For me, and for my dogs, it means one thing: hunting season is just around the corner. We’ve been gearing up, and this year, it’s extra special because I have a new apprentice in training, little Lacey Jo.
It’s amazing watching a new generation learn the ropes. Lacey Jo, my new puppy, is just starting her journey. This week, we’ve been introducing her to the sights, sounds, and smells of chukar and pheasant. Her instincts are kicking in, and it’s a joy to watch her pounce and sniff with such unbridled curiosity. She has a long way to go, but the fire is there.
And who better to teach her than her mother, the one and only Ayla? Watching her work is like watching a master artist. She moves with a silent grace through the fields, her nose a finely tuned instrument. She’ll lock onto a bird’s scent and go on point, every muscle in her body taut and ready.
But her real magic isn’t just in finding the birds; it’s in the retrieve. Ayla has a soft mouth, which means she can carry a bird back without a single feather out of place. After a successful shot, she’ll spring into action, find the downed bird, and bring it back to me with a gentle pride. She’s the perfect blend of power and tenderness.

We are so excited for the season to start. The dogs are in their prime, and I can feel their anticipation. There’s nothing quite like the bond you form with your dogs when you’re out in the field. It’s a partnership built on trust, respect, and a shared love for the hunt. Ayla is my rock, and soon, little Lacey Jo will be by her side, learning the traditions of the hunt.
Stay tuned for more updates from the field once the season kicks off! Happy hunting, everyone. Be safe!!!!
Thanks.
Best, Debbie
